How to Stop iPhone Saving Photos as HEIC (Save as JPG Instead)

Tired of HEIC files that won’t open on your computer? Here’s the 20-second setting change — plus what it costs you.

The setting (takes 20 seconds)

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
  3. Tap Formats.
  4. Change from High Efficiency to Most Compatible.

Done. Every new photo you take from now on saves as JPG, which opens everywhere — Windows, email, websites, printers, all of it.

What this changes (and what it doesn’t)

Changes: all new photos and videos save in the most compatible format (JPG for photos, H.264 for video). Doesn’t change: your existing photos. Everything already saved as HEIC stays HEIC — convert those with our free HEIC to JPG converter if you need JPGs of them.

The trade-off: storage space

This is the real cost. JPGs are roughly twice the size of HEICs. If you take a lot of photos, “Most Compatible” will fill your iPhone storage noticeably faster — potentially tens of GB over a year of heavy shooting. If you’re on a 128 GB iPhone and always near full, think twice.

There’s a middle option: Automatic transfer

Instead of switching formats, go to Settings → Photos and set “Transfer to Mac or PC” → Automatic. Your iPhone keeps saving space-efficient HEIC, but converts to JPG automatically when you copy photos to a computer via cable. You keep the storage savings and get compatible files on your PC. (This doesn’t help with AirDrop to some devices or direct uploads, though.)

Which should you choose?

  • Switch to Most Compatible if compatibility headaches bother you more than storage.
  • Keep HEIC + Automatic transfer if you want the space savings with fewer headaches.
  • Keep HEIC and convert manually if storage is tight — convert here free whenever you need JPGs.

Frequently asked questions

How do I stop my iPhone saving HEIC photos?

Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos will save as JPG.

Will this convert my existing HEIC photos?

No. Existing photos stay HEIC. Convert them individually with a free converter.

Does Most Compatible use more storage?

Yes — JPGs are roughly twice the size of HEICs, so your storage fills faster.

What’s the difference between High Efficiency and Most Compatible?

High Efficiency = HEIC/HEVC (smaller files, less compatible). Most Compatible = JPG/H.264 (larger files, works everywhere).

Can I switch back to HEIC later?

Yes — the same setting switches back anytime. Only new photos are affected either way.
