HEIC File Not Opening on Windows? Fix It in 1 Minute

HEIC File Not Opening on Windows? Here’s the Fix

Double-click a HEIC photo and nothing happens? It’s not corrupt — Windows just doesn’t understand the format. Fix it in under a minute.

First: your file is probably fine

When a HEIC file won’t open on Windows, 99% of the time the file is perfectly healthy — Windows simply lacks the codec to decode it. Don’t delete it, don’t re-download it five times. Pick one fix below.

Fix 1: Convert to JPG (fastest, no install)

  1. Open our free HEIC to JPG converter in your browser.
  2. Drop the HEIC file in and click Convert to JPG.
  3. Download the JPG — it opens in every Windows program ever made.

If you only need to view, share, or print the photo, stop here. This is the fix most people actually need.

Fix 2: Install Microsoft’s HEIF extensions

  1. Open the Microsoft Store.
  2. Install HEIF Image Extensions (free, by Microsoft).
  3. Also install HEVC Video Extensions — required, and it costs $0.99 in some regions.
  4. Restart the Photos app and try again.

After this, HEIC files open in Photos and show thumbnails in File Explorer. If the Store asks for payment for HEVC, Fix 1 or 3 is cheaper (free).

Fix 3: Use a free HEIC viewer

CopyTrans HEIC for Windows (free for personal use) adds HEIC support to Windows Photo Viewer and File Explorer thumbnails, plus right-click → Convert to JPG. IrfanView with its free plugins pack also opens HEIC and can batch-convert whole folders.

Fix 4: Check the file isn’t actually corrupt

If none of the above works, the file itself might be damaged — this happens with interrupted AirDrop transfers or failing SD cards. Signs of a truly corrupt file: it’s 0 KB in size, or every viewer (including iPhone) fails to open it. In that case, re-transfer from the iPhone with a cable and Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic so it arrives as JPG.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my HEIC file open on Windows?

Windows doesn’t include HEIC codecs by default. Install the HEIF extensions or convert the file to JPG.

Is my HEIC file corrupt or is it Windows?

Almost always Windows. If the file has a normal size (1–5 MB) and opened on the iPhone, it’s fine — Windows just can’t decode it.

Can I open HEIC in Windows Photo Viewer?

Yes, after installing CopyTrans HEIC for Windows (free), which adds support to the classic Photo Viewer.

Why do HEIC thumbnails not show in File Explorer?

Same missing-codec problem. The HEIF extensions or CopyTrans HEIC restore thumbnails.

What’s the quickest fix with no installs?

Convert the HEIC to JPG in your browser — the JPG opens everywhere with zero setup.
